It’s hard for many people to understand what IBS is because it is a condition that many are embarrassed to talk about. You often think you’re the only one with the problems, or that maybe the problems are possibly even all in your head – but that is not usually the case!
IBS is an acronym for the term Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and just as the name implies, it describes a set of symptoms that include primarily stomach pain and cramping, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. Your blood test, colonoscopy, and MRI came out all “normal”, and so doctors conclude it is IBS. Unfortunately for many, a diagnosis of IBS from a doctor means “Sorry, we don’t really know what’s wrong with you” and often a prescription for a medication with bad side effects that will likely only make your problems worse in the long run.
